Chrome Browser will start blocking ads on February 15

Google announced an initiative to begin blocking ads with its Chrome browser back in June. This announcement entailed that the usage of ad blocker extensions on Chrome has been on the rise and continues to do so. Since Google is a company that makes the majority of its money on advertising, it wants to make sure that web surfers can have a pleasant, unobtrusive experience without overly annoying ads.

Google will begin to block all ads from websites seen with the Chrome browser (including its own ads) starting on February 15, but only on one condition: the website doesn’t pass Google’s “Better Ads Standards”. This means that any website that displays ads that might be overly annoying won’t show any ads when the viewer uses Chrome.

You’ve seen these annoying ads before: full page ads, ads that flash, or ads that unexpectedly play sound or video. These types of ads taint an otherwise pleasant surfing experience. In turn, users might flock to Chrome to get away from those kinds of ads, and websites are pressured to get rid of obnoxious ads.

Website admins can use Google’s Ad Experience Report to identify which ads don’t comply with Better Ads Standards. If the website has a “passing” status, ads will show business as usual. If the status is “failing” for 30 days or more, Chrome will stop displaying ads on that website. The website will need to use the Ad Experience Report to request a revision of the website before it can start showing ads again.

This strategy does two things: it keeps people who care about their surfing experience on Chrome, and it encourages websites to serve more acceptable ads for everyone. Let’s see if Google’s initiative pays off.

New Facebook feature issues alert if you're spotted in someone else's photo

Facebook has introduced a couple of new features that the company says will help people better manage their identity on the social network. First up is the ability to issue notifications whenever you show up in someone else's photo.

So if you have the feature enabled, and Facebook spots you in a photo, and you're also part of the audience of that image, then you'll be notified about this, even if you've not been tagged in the photo.

"You’re in control of your image on Facebook and can make choices such as whether to tag yourself, leave yourself untagged, or reach out to the person who posted the photo if you have concerns about it," Facebook says.

Moving on, the company says they'll soon be rolling out another feature that'll let you know if someone is trying to impersonate you on Facebook by using your photo as their profile image.

It's worth mentioning that both these features are optional. The company also revealed that the functionalities use the same face recognition tech that's currently used to suggest friends you may want to tag in photos or videos.

As for availability, the company says these features will be accessible in most places, except for Canada and the EU where Facebook currently doesn't offer face recognition technology.

And finally, Facebook has also announced new tools for people with visual impairments.

Chrome 64 Beta Update adds stronger pop-up blocker, sitewide audio muting and more

While the Chrome 63 update is just rolling out to Mac, Windows, Linux, and Android, the new Chrome 64 is already out in beta with a handful of new features. Firstly, the new Chrome 64 update brings an improved pop-up blocker to prevent sites with abusive experiences like overlays, etc.

With the latest update, Chrome will also prevent malicious auto-redirects. In addition to that, this version also adds a new sitewide audio muting setting which will be accessible from the permissions dropdown by tapping the info icon or green lock in the URL bar.

There is also support for HDR video playback when Windows 10 is in HDR mode, however, it will require the Windows 10 Fall Creator Update, HDR-compatible graphics card, and display. Other new features include “Split view” feature for improved multitasking in tablet mode, screenshots on convertible devices, etc.

Google brings YouTube VR to steam, but it loaded with bugs

Google has brought support for its YouTube VR service to popular digital game distribution platform- Steam-and it is now available as an Early Access release for HTC's Vive VR headset.

However, YouTube VR's debut on Steam has not been a smooth release as early impressions of the 360-degree video streaming service state that frame drops are commonplace despite fairly powerful PC set-ups.

Moreover, some users have reported that the app simply refuses to function properly and crashes on start-up, but a member of the developers' team has responded to the issue and has promised to look into the bug.

Google backup and sync for desktop bags a major update

Google has released a new version of Backup and Sync client (build number 3.38.7642.3857), that brings a few major changes. As supposed to syncing all the files and folders, with this new update, you can now choose to sync just the photos and videos. To do this, just go to the preferences section and choose which files to sync.

In addition to that, if you want to add folders to Google Drive, you can now just right click whichever folder you want, and then tap on the Sync this folder option. No need to upload the folders manually to the cloud, which can sometimes be a hassle and be so slow as well. The update has also been able to fix some issues from the previous one, including creating multiple copies of the .exe file in Windows and more.

That said, all these features are built into the client itself and you can just download the latest version of the same and start using them right out of the box.

Xbox's party chat is now available on Android, coming to ios soon

Microsoft is reportedly testing its party chat feature in the Xbox apps on Android and iOS. The feature allows users, and especially gamers, to voice chat with Xbox Live friends while playing. Microsoft has already released the beta version of the app on Google Play Store while iOS users must register to for beta testing.

The feature is pretty useful for gamers as it can replace traditional gaming headsets if you're not a fan and it even works when you're sitting far away from your gaming device. Further, players can use party chat on their smartphones to interact with friends even when they're not playing and is not limited to Xbox console gamers.

You can give Xbox's party chat feature a try by downloading the app from Google Play Store (free).

Facebook now allows adding whatsapp button to ads

In a major push to advertising on its platforms, Facebook will now allow users to contact brands and advertisers over WhatsApp. The social media giant now allows adding "Click-to-WhatsApp" buttons in promoted posts and the feature is gradually rolling out to users in most parts of the world.

Meanwhile, Facebook is set to launch a dedicated "WhatsApp Business" app soon and this button will allow users to experience an integrated medium of service and support. Further, users can also enquire about products, seek appointments, or demo products offered by the brand using WhatsApp.

Facebook noted these ads will only be visible to users who have WhatsApp installed on their smartphones.

Google announces LoWPAN supports for android things platform

Google has announced the introduction of LoWPAN (Low-power Wireless Personal Area Network) API support for Android Things devices, a facility that will allow developers to configure and manage low power networks for connected devices.

Thanks to LoWPAN, devices on the Android Things platform can communicate directly with each other over a 'Thread' network- a highly secure, low-power networking technology that utilizes a mesh-like architecture.

Regarding the advantages of LoWPAN's implementation, Google's blog states that "These types of low-power connectivity solutions enable Android Things devices to perform edge-computing tasks, aggregating data locally from nearby devices to make critical decisions without a constant connection to cloud services."

Facebook admits social media usage can be harmful

A former Facebook executive recently claimed that the social media service is destroying the fabric of society. The allegation has surely caught the firm's attention, prompting it to admit that Facebook does cause social anxiety but only if it is used in a certain manner.

Facebook recently conducted a scientific assessment in partnership with multiple institutions to study the impact of Facebook usage on users' emotional state, and arrived at the conclusion that "reading about others online might lead to negative social comparison."

The networking giant's official blog post further states that "In general, when people spend a lot of time passively consuming information — reading but not interacting with people — they report feeling worse afterward."

Google removes 'App' section from the Chrome Web Store as it marks the end of Chrome app

Google had announced back in August 2016 that it would end Chrome apps across Windows, Mac and Linux platforms citing the reason that less than 1 percent of users were using them. While Google did mention at the time that it might take them up to Q1 2018 to strip out the program completely, the company has shut down the "app" section present previously on the Chrome Web Store .
Google is yet to make an official statement but it has removed the 'Apps' section from Chrome and has started emailing developers about the same, leaving only the 'extensions' and 'themes' tab to choose from. According to a report by Ars Technica , Chrome applications which are already installed by users will continue to function for the time being but will be phased out come Q1 2018.

Facebook brings 'Did You Know' section to know its users better

Facebook wants to know more about its users than it already does. It has come with a Did You Know feature where the user has to answer questions posed by Facebook.
According to the TechCrunch, Facebook in this section asks questions like life inspiration, a superpower one wants, and other such positive questions.
For the Did You Know section it is essential for the user to first update the Facebook app. The update of this feature may appear in batches for some. This feature seems to be similar to the tbh app meant for teenagers. According to the TechCrunch , it could be one of the ways Facebook could be taking over tbh. The social networking giant had taken over tbh in 2017. The app used to ask similar questions.

Microsoft and Qualcomm’s ‘Always Connected PCs,’ explained

A couple of days ago, Qualcomm and Microsoft announced they were collaborating on a category of computer called the ‘Always Connected PC.’ In other words, a PC that behaves more like a smartphone. That could have potentially massive implications for the way we use our computers, but there are some important drawbacks as well.
Let’s break it down.
What exactly is an Always Connected PC?
The ‘Always Connected’ bit is basically a marketing term Microsoft is using for a new batch of Windows PCs running on processors with ARM architectures – the same type of super-efficient chips on our mobile devices.
These PCs will have two primary claims to fame over the ‘x86’ type processors in current PCs: constant cellular connectivity, and ridiculously long battery life – over 20 hours on a charge. For comparison most Windows Ultrabooks are in the 12-hour range.
In particular, the company is partnering with Qualcomm, which makes the processing platform used in the vast majority of Android devices, including the Snapdragon 835 in the Galaxy S8/Note 8 (in the US), the Pixel 2, the OnePlus 5, the LG V30, etc.
It’s possible the company might work with other ARM partners in the future, but Qualcomm is getting the first go at it. The first couple of Always Connected PCs will use the same chipsets as those phones.
The idea is that by combining super-efficient processors with constant connectivity, PCs will be as convenient as our smartphones. With battery life over 20 hours, you won’t ever have to think about carrying a charger. Like your phone, they’ll instant wake from sleep. With constant LTE connectivity, you won’t have to scramble to find a hotpost.
How is that different from existing PCs with cellular connectivity?
Let’s be clear: Always Connected PCs won’t do anything you can’t already do with existing PCs, and there are already plenty of PCs on the market with constant LTE connectivity. But they might do some things
better.
The smaller and more efficient processors allow for bigger batteries with lower power drainage; think of how powerful and efficient our smartphones are. It also means computers could get smaller and lighter while still providing solid battery life.
The Surface Pro now comes in an LTE model, and has good battery life, but doesn’t earn the ‘Always Connected PC’ moniker because it doesn’t have an ARM chip
Meanwhile, Qualcomm is already a major player in the mobile industry with major clout with phone carriers. That combination of factors could mean that cellular connectivity on PCs will become the norm, rather than a niche.
On a related note, it’s not clear whether the Always Connected PC branding will be exclusive to ARM processors, or whether they will apply to Intel and AMD chips that meet certain criteria.
What are some models on the way?
So far, only two Always Connected PCs have officially been announced: The Asus NovaGo and the HP Envy X2. Qualcomm said Lenovo
would be announcing its own entry at CES in January.
We went hands on with the Asus and HP models here . But TL;DR – they’re typical 2-in-1s, except with the promise of incredible battery life. Of course, we need to put those claims to the test once the devices start shipping next year.
The first batch of Always Connected PCs are expected to launch in Spring of 2018, so you have some time to prepare your wallet.
Will they be able to run regular Windows programs?
Yes, but with some restrictions. The two PCs mentioned above come preloaded with Windows 10 S – the version of Windows limited to apps from the Microsoft Store.
Always Connected PCs should be able to run any apps available on the Microsoft Store, but that’s still a pretty limited selection. In my very brief testing, these seemed to run as smoothly as the typical Ultrabook.
Should you upgrade to Windows 10 Pro or Home, you will still be able to run most traditional software, so long as it comes with a 32-bit (x86) version. Software that are exclusively 64-bit will not work (unless it was designed specifically for ARM processors) but those are pretty rare. According to a Microsoft Spokesperson:
The emulation technology supports x86 applications. We do not emulate 64-bit applications, the majority of which are AAA Games. Additionally, the emulation technology does not emulate applications that require kernel-mode drivers (e.g. some anti-virus applications). We are working on an ARM64 SDK that will enable developers to author applications for ARM64 and we’ll have more news to share in the future.
However – and this is an important caveat – it remains to be seen how well x86 emulation runs. You should be able to run Photoshop, for instance, but we can’t say how smoothly it will run until we can spend more time with an ARM-powered device.
Lastly, there’s the simple fact that these are still mobile processors at the end of the day. It’ll be a while before we get Always On PCs that can match the performance of high-end Windows Laptops.
What’s the point?
Unless your laptop has truly marathon battery, chances are you take your charger with you for all but short outings. Chances are you’re constantly struggling to find an internet connection unless you’re at work home.
Always on PCs could change that. We’d start to treat our computers more like our phones, generally not worrying about power or connectivity. For Microsoft, that means you’ll be taking your PCs to many more places.
Again, PCs with LTE connectivity and solid battery life already exist, but Qualcomm and Microsoft are doubling down on the concept. Over the next few years, it could very well become normal to get a cellular plan for your PC to go along with your smartphone – or perhaps even sharing a plan. The move will also likely push Intel into producing even more efficient and powerful processors. Competition fosters innovation.

ProtonMail Bridge is an accessible encryption solution for Apple Mail, Outlook, and Thunderbird

ProtonMail is bringing its encrypted email offering to popular desktop clients. Available now, ProtonMail ‘Bridge’ offers the same end-to-end encryption of its web version to Apple Mail, Outlook, and Thunderbird.
After downloading and installing the app, it runs behind the scenes as a local email server. The Bridge communicates directly with ProtonMail’s encrypted email servers through its API, which offers all the benefits of end-to-end and zero-access encryption: meaning, even ProtonMail can’t access your email.
While third-party solutions offering encryption on desktop clients isn’t new, ProtonMail’s is perhaps the first that doesn’t require a change in user behavior to take advantage of it. Unlike GPG tools, for example, Bridge requires only some initial setup (with photo tutorials to walk you through it). Once installed, users don’t have to worry about installing plugins, managing keys, or changing the way they send and receive email.
For a world that still hasn’t mastered basic password security, the idea that casual email users are going to jump in feet-first to end-to-end email encryption might be a tad ambitious. But change is happening, slowly, and ProtonMail just removed one of the largest hurdles to widespread adoption.

Google Play’s top downloads in 2017: And the award goes to …

Google this week released its list of top downloads on Google Play for the year 2017. There were some surprises, like seeing the King of horror play second fiddle to a self-help book, or a liquored-up animated scientist and his grandson beating a zombie juggernaut.
Without further ado, here’s the list of top five most downloaded Apps, games, songs, movies, TV shows, and books on Google Play in 2017:
Apps:
Games:
Songs:
Movies:
TV shows:
Books:
Right off the bat, the list of most popular apps is full of drama and intrigue. And not just because TopBuzz Video made the list. FaceApp, which admittedly has some pretty cool functionality, had quite an interesting year thanks to a determination to be off-putting .
The real gem on this list is Boomerang, of course, because the 80s were awesome. If you weren’t around for them, then Yarn might be more your thing. Scary stories told in text message? That’s called dating.
We all knew Super Mario Run would be the biggest thing since the last big thing Nintendo
brought to Android .. Honestly, Nintendo, it’s starting to feel unfair. Super Mario Run is a platformer based on other platformers that are based on an obscure game from the past called Super Mario Bros.
The top 5 most downloaded songs, like the rest of the entire planet, is mostly just Kendrick Lamar and Ed Sheeran.
It’s crazy that Doctor Strange is the fifth most downloaded movie, because it proves that babies randomly smashing buttons on their parents phones are a large portion of purchasers. If it were up to me, I’d just put Wonder Woman in the top five twice. Scratch that, all the movies in 2017 should be Wonder Woman.
On the small screen, Game of Thrones took the coveted number one spot – good show, well deserved – but Rick and Morty in second? Firstly, Archer – this is what happens when it’s hard as hell to find somewhere to watch your latest season. You don’t get to win Google by avoiding streaming services. And second, bravo humanity. Rick and Morty is an excellent show that has to be watched a few times to appreciate – like reading Herman Melville.
And now that JK Rowling is done ruling Earth, we actually have new books to read. In January, if you’d told me that Mark Manson’s book with an F-bomb in the title would be downloaded more than IT by Stephen King, I would have called you a fool. Well, who’s the fool now? Me. Well, played Mr. Manson. Video games, fantasy, and suicide round out the rest of the Potter-free books.
Here’s hoping your favorites made the list this year! If they didn’t, maybe Google isn’t your thing. Check out Apple’s top downloads here and see if you’re more of an iOS type.

World’s first AR app for Twitter is a preview of what’s to come

Twitter in augmented reality is exactly as cool as it sounds.
TweetReality brings tweets, search, mentions, profiles and all your favorite features and displays them neatly on a virtual screen that overlays your iPhone or iPad display (sorry
Android fans).
Navigating is a bit different, but fairly straightforward and intuitive. You can still retweet, reply, and heart status updates much like you would on the mobile app. And while we wouldn’t call TweetReality a “polished” app just yet, it’s entirely usable and a great start.
While AR is cool no matter where you use it, this is the type of technology that improves as better wearables come out to take advantage of it — whether that’s cool new AR glasses from Apple , or a slimmed down Hololens from Microsoft .
TweetReality is available now. You can take it for a spin by downloading it at Apple’s App Store .

Google search now has celebs answering questions about themselves

Celebrity trivia buffs are going to love
Google’s latest update to its search engine, which sees movers and shakers in entertainment answer questions about themselves on results pages on mobile.
It’s rolling out right now in the US, but I found that it works here in India too. Fire up Google search on your phone and search for, “Where did Priyanka Chopra grow up?” to hear the Bollywood superstar respond in person in a short video clip.
It’s kind of like Wired’s video series , in which celebs team up in pairs to answer frequently asked questions about themselves. In addition to Chopra, Google’s roped in Will Ferrell, Tracee Ellis Ross, Gina Rodriguez, Kenan Thompson, Allison Williams, Nick Jonas, Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, Seth MacFarlane, Jonathan Yeo, and cronut creator Dominique Ansel to pilot the new feature. It plans to add more celebrities to the list in the coming months.

YouTube reportedly plans to take on Spotify with a streaming music service next year

YouTube is gearing up to launch a paid streaming music service by March 2018,
reports Bloomberg .
That could help the company take on the likes of Spotify and Apple Music – but given that YouTube already has a Music app , as well as a paid subscription service (called YouTube Red ), and Google already has a streaming service and music store, it’s an odd strategy to start on at this point.
Of course, the reason is most likely money. Earlier this year, Goldman Sachs predicted in its Music in the Air report that the streaming music market would grow to $28 billion per year by 2030, and Google will certainly want a large slice of that pie.
The one major advantage YouTube could have over its rivals is a huge catalog of video content to complement its music library. The service, which is internally referred to as Remix, is slated to feature video clips alongside tracks, and YouTube is said to be courting artists to help promote Remix when it’s closer to launch.
At any rate, YouTube will certainly have its work cut out for it, between creating a well thought out service and apps to contend with seasoned ones like Spotify, and securing licenses from major record labels and distributors to fill its catalog and make it available worldwide.
It’ll also be interesting to see what this spells for Google Play Music, which has been around since 2011, but still feels like a work in progress in some respects. There was also some talk about merging YouTube Red with Google Play Music, but it seems like this new development might derail those plans.
We’ve contacted Google to learn more and will update this post if there’s a response.

PhoneWagon raises $1.2M to track when marketing campaigns lead to phone calls

When it comes to tracking the effectiveness of online advertising campaigns, PhoneWagon CEO Ryan Shank said there’s been a big piece missing for most businesses — namely, how often those campaigns lead to phone calls.
Shank has plenty of experience in local marketing, having worked in sales at Yext, then serving as COO Mhelpdesk, which was sold to IAC’s HomeAdvisor .
And he’s announcing that PhoneWagon has raised $1.2 million in seed funding, led by Birchmere Ventures, with participation from Active Capital. The startup was part of the most recent class of startups at Techstars NYC , and its angel investors include early Yext employees Adam Liebman, Adam Kaplan and Dave Greenberger.
Shank acknowledged that there are existing call tracking services like CallRail , but he argued that their pricing and the difficulty of setup puts them out of reach for many small businesses.
“These other guys, they even speak too technical about it,” he said.
With PhoneWagon, Shank aimed to build something that was “easy-to-use, beautiful, simple” and therefore usable by SMBs.
Businesses just install a few lines of JavaScript on their website, then when someone comes to the site thanks to an online ad, they’re presented with a dynamically generated phone number.
If you’re the kind of company that gets a lot of business over the phone, these dynamic numbers make it easier to break down which traffic sources, keywords and campaigns drove the most valuable calls.
Other features include integrations with Google AdWords and other platforms, as well as the ability to show local and toll-free phone numbers to each visitor.
PhoneWagon already has nearly 150 customers and is added 40 new customers every month, Shank said.

The price of bitcoin has doubled in two weeks, now above $16K

The cryptocurrency’s gains Thursday morning hit new heights, striking well above $18,000 across widely varying exchanges, coming to rest above $16,000 while the popular Coinbase exchange had been suffering major issues due to “record high traffic.”
Bitcoin was trading below $8,000 two weeks ago.
This is a truly, truly volatile game at this point; the swings didn’t appear as consequential when the market cap rested in the low billions, but as institutional pocketbooks push that cap to nearly $300 billion, the stakes are raised considerably.
What’s further disturbing is how widely the prices are varying across exchanges — there doesn’t seem to be a stable consensus on where the price is. While bitcoin prices on Coinbase’s GDAX exchange approached nearly $19,000 (!!!) this morning, others had the price sitting at thousands of dollars less.
via http://www.worldcoinindex.com/coin/bitcoin a few minutes ago
The price is currently trading at $15,499 on Bitfinex and $17,639 on GDAX. Coindesk’s
bitcoin price index currently has the cryptocurrency trading around $16,000. These figures have probably swung by several hundred dollars since I typed this sentence.
The fact that even the most established exchanges are having trouble holding consensus on price isn’t great for buyers who can stand to lose (or gain) to exchange volatility on a currency that already has volatility baked into its ethos at this young stage.
The arbitrage opportunities appear to be significant here; generally, that alone is enough to correct the markets, but extreme congestion in both the bitcoin and ethereum blockchains are making it much harder to move bitcoin and ether between exchanges. For example, New York-based Gemini had temporarily suspended both bitcoin and ether withdraws this morning because the odds of a transaction actually processing were so low.

Coinbase hits top spot on Apple’s US App Store despite struggling to handle bitcoin demand

Ignoring recent price rises for a second, if you can — there’s no greater sign of bitcoin fever than an app that lets you buy the cryptocurrency becoming the most downloaded app in the App Store.
That’s exactly what happened on Thursday when Coinbase, the $1.6-billion-valued company behind what is arguably the world’s best-known exchange for converting fiat into crypto, hit the top spot for free apps in Apple’s U.S. App Store for the first time as the price of bitcoin rocketed past $17,000 thanks via a price jump of over 20 percent in 24 hours.
The irony of Coinbase hitting the mainstream is that, for many customers, the service was actually unavailable for large portions of the day. The Coinbase app was hanging for many — making it impossible to check an account balance let alone buy into The Next Great Bitcoin Rush — and its web-based service didn’t fare any better. The site was “down for maintenance” for large chunks of the day, frustrating customers looking to buy, sell or merely access their account.
BREAKING: Coinbase unavailable.
The company now has more customers than Charles Schwab and has opened as many as 300,000 accounts in a day.
Today has unprecedented volume and demand.
There are litterally so many people trying to buy Bitcoin that exchanges are crashing.
pic.twitter.com/ZzMKkplyga
— Bruce Fenton (@brucefenton) December 7, 2017
Things appears to have stabilized at the time of writing and, to be fair to Coinbase, it wasn’t the only fiat-crypto exchange that buckled under the pressure and its capacity has clearly improved significant since its last major outage when bitcoin passed $2,000 .
Still, it’s insane that an app can race to the top of the App Store despite not actually functioning for many users that very day. But hey, we live in a world where one bitcoin is worth north of $18,000 so ‘normal’ is becoming harder to define.
